Geoffrey Parker begins by defining the characteristics of Spain's strategic culture: the king's distinctive system of government, the "information overload" that threatened to engulf it, and the various strategic priorities and assumptions used to overcome the disparity between aims and means. The author investigates the strengths and weaknesses of Philip's strategic vision, the priorities that underlay his policies, the practices and prejudices that influenced his decision-making, and the external factors that affected the achievement of his goals. From 1556 until his death in 1598, Philip II of Spain ruled the first global empire in history, yet no one so far has analyzed precisely how he accomplished this feat.

In her portrayal, Clapton wasn’t sober for the entire time he and Pattie were associated (which he admits in his recent memoir, Clapton). Pattie, emotionally abandoned by George, has no real self to fall back on, having identified so very early on as the wife and muse of a great man.Įnter Eric Clapton, George Harrison’s friend, portrayed here as a cross-addicted, seductive manipulator who, over the course of several years, plays on Pattie’s insecurity and neediness. Everything falls apart at the same time: George cheats on Pattie (at one point with Maureen Starr, Ringo’s wife), John pushes Cynthia away for Yoko Ono, and Jane Asher leaves Paul McCartney after she catches him in their house in bed with another woman. Pattie’s description of how she and George grew apart is poignant, especially given her perspective, all these years later, on the immaturity and confusion that led each to push the other away when, all clichés aside, they needed each other the most. Poor Pattie, so accustomed to pleasing her man and so confounded by his behavior. We also have other parts of the planets and the moon included as settings at some points. They're brutal and they're allowed to be, and they even like it. The Voorstlanders are not a group you would ever wish to come across as they believe they are working the name of their God and they do not care what other races think. They also keep Gharm who are basically slaves that they conquered and brought with them to Voorstod. Voorstod is a brutal land which favours men over women and forbids the women from having a say, dressing how they wish or having any freedom. One of these people who has migrated to Hobbs Land is Marie Manone who moved from Voorstod with her young son Sam. Hobbs Land is a farming community which was one the home of the Owlbright cultures but was abandoned by them and is now take over by the Hobbs food production company and various settlements made up of willing migrants who want to live a peaceful life. This is largely set on two different planets: Hobbs land, and Voorstod. It's also my first foray into Sheri S Tepper's work and will no doubt be the first of many as I definitely enjoyed this one. This book is one I picked up as I wanted to continue reading some older SF by ladies, and it did not disappoint. These two themes are linked because Santiago’s perseverance is the reason he continues to wake up every day, go out to sea, and return empty-handed. Suffering, at least in the snapshot the reader gets of the old man’s life, seems central. His body, which was not in a good state, to begin with, is forced to contend with three days at sea without real rest or respite from the pressures the hooked marlin imposes on his body. The line cuts into his hands and his back. He bears the weight of the fish as it pulls his skiff along. Once he gets to sea his suffering only increases. It’s seen through his small shack, the bed he sleeps on, his lack of food, and in the eyes of the other fishermen. He suffers without complaint in his poverty. It’s clear through context clues, as well as Manolin’s desire to care for the old man, that Santiago is very poor. The majority of the novel, whether Santiago is onshore or at sea, is punctuated by struggle. Of the variety of themes to be found in The Old Man and the Sea hardship and the perseverance needed to surmount those hardships is one of the most prominent. The Old Man and the Sea Themes Hardship and Perseverance Within the novella, a reader will come across complex themes of strength and perseverance, as well as symbols of perfection and age which are all addressed directly. Hemingway’s unique style of writing is exemplified through short, concise sentences and a factual approach to the events he portrays. After my review, I have images from the sequels (in which Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's original engine is put in a camper van before being restored to her original body in the third book) as well as the original cover and interior art from another favorite of mine, the amazing John Burningham. Candlewick Press has reissued the original and the sequels, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Flies Again and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and the Race Against Time, with new illustrations by Joe Berger. While I have read one or two 007 books and seen more than a few of the movies, I had never read or seen the movie (which IS NOT a Disney production) or musical of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! When I heard that Frank Cottrell Boyce, a favorite of mine, was writing updated sequels to the book, I had to give it a go. Fleming wrote it for his son, who was ten at the time, while he was convalescing from his first heart attack.
